Hiking & Parks

Overview

Heaven’s Up North is surrounded by the forests, parks and public lands that define Wisconsin’s Northwoods. Guests can plan anything from a relaxed walk to a full day outside, then return to the campground without having to build the entire trip around one activity.

Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest

Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest covers a large part of northern Wisconsin and includes trails, forest roads, lakes and wildlife habitat near the Lakewood area. Because the forest is extensive, choose a specific trail or recreation area before leaving rather than relying on a general map pin.

Peshtigo River State Forest

Peshtigo River State Forest offers forested landscapes, water access and opportunities for hiking, fishing, paddling and wildlife watching. Review current state information for trail access, parking and seasonal conditions.

Governor Thompson State Park

Governor Thompson State Park includes wooded trails, picnic areas and shoreline along the Caldron Falls Flowage. It can work well for families looking to combine a hike with time near the water.

Plan your visit

Trail surfaces, parking, fees and seasonal access vary by location. Check the managing agency’s current information, bring water and weather-appropriate clothing and avoid relying on outdated trail screenshots.

Stop by the campground office if you want help choosing a direction for the day.
